My assignment is simple - breakfast, lunch or dinner for two, for no more than $20. This must include beverages (non-alcoholic), but not taxes or tip. I’m searching for true value for money in four categories:
Taste: 1(inedible) - 5 (finger-licking)
Fill Factor: 1 (feed me!) - 5 (shoot me!),
Service and Atmosphere: (+) good, (/) indifferent, (-) see comments
To keep things uncomplicated, the first two factors count for 50% of the total rating. Yes, you read it right. Service and ‘decor’ are pure fluff for this column, which makes sense if you think about it; if you’re not getting a decent portion of good food, does anything else matter? I will, however, subtract points if either adversely hinders one’s ability to enjoy said meal, whether rude, obnoxious behavior from service personnel, dubious (or worse!) standards of cleanliness, or something outrageous like fearing for one’s safety. |
Crepeville (Davis)
Reviewed by KLM
College towns are filled with students on tight budgets, and restaurants know only quantity and quality can compete with dorm room microwaves. Crepeville in Davis fully utilizes their location and menu to meet the needs of this particular clientele, much to the delight and benefit of ‘outsiders’ as well.
This airy corner restaurant, with large windows and comfortable seating, is noisy, colorful, busy, and perfect for breakfast.
Obviously, their speciality is everything crepes. Create your own beginning with the basic crepe ($4.45), filled with cheddar cheese and onions. More than 2 dozen additions ($0.80 each), from pineapple or curry, to sun-dried tomato pesto or scrambled egg, allow you to personalize it to whatever your tastebud desires. There’s also a dozen speciality crepes on the menu ($5.95-7.45), the most unusual being the Tofu Crepe, with smoked tofu, onions, baby corn, tomato, bell peppers and spinach, sauteed in peanut sauce. The crepes themselves are large and chewy, and won’t burst open when the fillings are piled in. A heaping helping of house potatoes are served alongside. While well seasoned and crispy, ours were definitely scrapped from the bottom of the pan.
Need an a.m. meat fix? Try the chicken apple sausage ($2.25). It’s served split & grilled like a hot link, almost a meal in itself.
If it’s a boost of sugar you’re craving, try the French toast ($4.95). The mound of butter in the middle of the plate, masquerading as a scoop of ice cream, quickly melted when spread on the four fresh, thick slices of perfectly griddled bread. Order it with fresh fruit ($1.75) and you can call it wholesome. Those in the know aren’t alarmed by the strange yellow liquid on the fruit, it’s orange juice.
If it’s a good day, grab a seat outside and watch cyclists race to class. Or sit inside and eavesdrop on co-ed’s for fun, free entertainment. Either way, basking in the rarified air of ‘ed-u-ma-cation’, you’ll feel smarter just by being there.
(Word is there’ll be a Crepesville in Sacramento soon...)
Our total: $16.05 Basic w/mushrooms (5.25), French toast w/fruit ($6.70), Chicken Apple Sausage ($2.25), Tea (3+ cups from one pot! $1.85)
