My assignment is simple - breakfast, lunch or dinner for two, for no more than $20. This must include beverages (non-alcoholic), but not taxes or tip. I’m searching for true value for money in four categories:
Taste: 1(inedible) - 5 (finger-licking)
Fill Factor: 1 (feed me!) - 5 (shoot me!),
Service and Atmosphere: (+) good, (/) indifferent, (-) see comments
To keep things uncomplicated, the first two factors count for 50% of the total rating. Yes, you read it right. Service and ‘decor’ are pure fluff for this column, which makes sense if you think about it; if you’re not getting a decent portion of good food, does anything else matter? I will, however, subtract points if either adversely hinders one’s ability to enjoy said meal, whether rude, obnoxious behavior from service personnel, dubious (or worse!) standards of cleanliness, or something outrageous like fearing for one’s safety.

Smack in the middle of all things antique, you can enjoy a light, fresh lunch at Seasons on Sutter in Old Folsom. The food philosophy of this café style eatery, sitting in an historic building amongst neighbors who specialize in all things old, is ‘everything fresh, cooked to order’. (For the uninitiated, this usually means a good meal awaits, but it’s going to cost you.) The menu of specials on the blackboard outside drew us into the airy but intimate space, with a soaring pressed tin ceiling (a reproduction of the original), hand painted walls and comfortable upholstered bench seating. We were greeting with a smile, got a seat and, reviewing the menu, knew we’d have to order creatively to stay within our budget. I can confidently report that you can get an excellent lunch in such a swanky place if you order smart and drink ‘pitcher’ water with lemon.
I had the California Crepe ($8.95), filled with spinach, tomato, mushroom, avocado and jack cheese. It was the size of a decent burrito, hot, filling and, once I added a pinch of salt, quite tasty. It came with a large chopped green salad that made it a satisfyingly full meal. My partner opted for one of the day’s many specials, a cup of chicken noodle soup with broccoli and smoked turkey quiche ($7.95). They were most impressed with the homemade soup stock and the serving cup is actually the size of a medium bowl. Likewise, the wedge of quiche was twice what one would expect and, while flavorful, it also cried out for a pinch of salt. More sandwich minded ($5.95-10.95)? Share one, order a starter - or better yet dessert, and you’ll still walk out with change. If the sweet potato fries ($4.95) are on the menu, go for it; while a bit pricey if you’re used to ordering jumbo fries for $1.95, there’s enough for two and they’re worth every dollar. Or, order a cup of soup, served with fresh rosemary focaccia ($3.75), small salad ($3.50) and a mug of their hot spiced cinnamon tea ($1.95).

With smart choices, you too can eat seasonal food, freshly prepared, in the midst of all things old and dusty.

Our total: $18.90 w/out tax or tip. Crepe w/salad $8.95, Soup & quiche $7.95, ice tea (w/free refill $1.95, glass of water w/lemon free!
