MARLON BRANDO
1924-2004

Today, Director Francis Ford Coppola said Marlon Brando would be pissed if people were "chiming in to give their comments about his death." Well, too bad Francis, because that's precisely what we're about to do.

For the past twenty years he may have rarely stepped in front of the camera, but in some ways it didn't matter - he had already done his work. Revolutionizing movies through his gritty, naturalistic method acting, he brought a realism to movies never seen before. It's taken for granted now that an actor should strive to inhabit their role, but back then Brando was seen by many as some perverse joke. Of course he was an artist and every serious actor or actress walks in long shadow of his work. Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Edward Norton and so many others are his cinematic progeny.

Yes, the guy also pioneered the art of the "difficult to work with" actor - most recently demanding his director Frank Oz to not be in the same room as him during filming of The Score - but he still remains the greatest actor of all time.
