No one will deny that life can throw us some amazing twists and turns.  But, how different would therapy be if you turned left instead of right – and ended up getting counseling from a tax accountant instead?  Intriguing?  Mais oui!  It appeals to the voyeur in us all; of course William (Fabrice Luchini) is drawn in to the tales of marital turmoil of Anna (Sandrine Bonnaire).  Sex is always going to be more interesting than taxes.

The French aren’t often known for their humor -- they worship Jerry Lewis after all – so it was a surprise to find myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion.  Watching William revel in his new love and dance around Risky Business-style was a delight.  When William confides what he is doing to the actual therapist, Dr. Monnier, he replies, “We both treat the same neuroses; what to declare and what to hide.”  And then Monnier charges him for his time.

Don’t let the idea of subtitles scare you away from this quietly touching film. You will be so drawn in by the realness of the characters that you will quickly forget that you are reading along. Take the trip over to the Tower Theater and pretend it’s La Toeur de Theatre.
