"Does
this mean you don't like my new do?"

When
Dean Cain first watched the news coverage of the Laci Peterson
case, did he have the same feeling of dread that the men in Iraq
who just happened to look like Sadaam Hussein must have had?
You know the men I mean, they have that certain "look"
so they're tapped to fill in for Sadaam at various functions.
Cain must have known that it was just a matter of time before
some made-for-tv movie exec would come a knockin'.
As a
resident of the Central Valley, I found myself transfixed by the
portrayal of Modesto and her citizens. As the movie began,
I found myself jotting down notes: "There's the Water,
Wealth, Contentment, Health arch. There's Brenden Theatres.
There's some stereotypical valley fog." I was impressed
by Cain's spot-on recreation of a "Central Valley" accent
(yes, we do have one). The fictionalized composite characters
who serve as Scott's own personal "did he or didn't he"
jury were an accurate representation of the thoughts of many of
us who lived in this area during those weeks between Laci's disappearance
and the discovery of the bodies.
For
a movie about a true life murder investigation, USA Network did
a decent job. They found a balance between actors who look
like their character and actors who can actually act. However,
there were some scenes that relied a bit too heavily on dramatic
interpretation. Are we to actually believe that Laci's mother,
Sharon Rocha, found out about the discovery of Laci's body while
watching the news all alone?! And why is it that Laci's
father, a rancher, is all studded up with the fashion and accent
of GW Bush in his Texas Ranch outfit?
And
then the realization that this really happened to real people
sunk in. We can make little jokes about Scott Peterson's
resemblance to Dean Cain and (during the light hair and goatee
phase) to Ben Afleck. But, the reality is that a woman and
her unborn child are dead. Did Scott kill her? Either
the answer is yes, or the answer is "Gee, there sure are
a lot of unexplainable coincidences, Mr. Peterson."
