Episode 87: Let There Be Light

Reviewed by Lise Ching

In episode 87, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) asks: "When it comes to men, even when we try to keep it light, how do we wind up in the dark?" While I suppose it's better than the title of each episode being "Relationships, even the sex-only ones, are an incredible amount of work," I can't help but think of Doogie Howser when the Question of the Week scrolls across the screen.

Carrie's just begun a fling with Aleksandr (dazzlingly played by Mikhail Baryshnikov; I say "dazzingly" because I generally find him so, well, vanilla). She initially tries to just have him as a Lover, but she ends up liking him too much. Messiness ensues. I like this pairing if only because of my fondness for the "sexy older man."

Who doesn't love Samantha (Kim Catrall)? She represents the inner slut in all of us. While I hated her sleazy love, Richard (James Remar) and hoped he would never return, I was pleased that they didn't allow Samantha to just skip off smoothly to Monogamyville with her boytoy Smith Jarrod (Jason Lewis). Best line of the episode (Samantha on current boyfriend Jarrod): "I don't know whether to blow him or burp him."

I hesitate to admit this, but I think that I am most like Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). I bond with her each time her neuroses tree bears fruit. We shared a fruit salad this episode as she moved on-again boyfriend/father-of-her-child into her apartment and confronted her incredibly foxy neighbor/former lover.

If Samantha is the inner slut, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is the classic Good Girl. Recently remarried and still trying to get pregnant, she seeks to distract herself from her recent round of infertility woes by volunteering to help the blind. The second best line of the episode came when Charlotte wondered aloud to her SuperQueer friend Anthony (Mario Cantone) if there was anything worse than being blind. His response, "Acid washed jeans with a matching jacket."
