The Triplets of Belleville

Director: Sylvain Chomet

Reviewed by Chris Ching

In the first few minutes of The Triplets of Belleville, you will see a man stuck between the powerful butt cheeks of a lady of exceptionally high girth. Yep, this isn't exactly Disney territory here folks. Triplets is a very adult animated film - not adult in a graphically sexual way (although there is brief nudity)- but a toon that adults won't feel embarrassed to be checking out.

And an enjoyable one at that. I liked the off beat story of a grandmother rescuing her bicycle racing grandson from the mafia. I liked the quirky character design with its extremely exaggerated physical features. I liked how they managed to forward the story with virtually no dialogue. I really liked the overweight pooch. However at a running time of barely ninety minutes, I felt a little gypped for so short a feature. If I had paid the full ticket price of 7.50 (or God forbid even higher), I would seriously have asked for my money back. As it stands now, Triplets of Belleville is too ambitious to be considered an animated short, but ends too soon to really get under your skin.

Still Triplets of Belleville deserves major kudos for demonstrating traditional animation can generate just as much entertainment and spectacle as anything produced with pixels. With Disney and Dreamworks cranking out derivative crap like Brother Bear and Sinbad, traditional animation is on life support and Dr. Kevorkian has just been assigned as doctor.
