:: Sex Ed ::

Your encyclopedic knowledge of video games has finally paid off and you've found yourself in bed with the girl of your dreams. Those of us at SJ Fanboy have a few tips to keep you in fine fighting form.

It burns when I pee
Nothing will get a guy to the doctor quicker than fire shooting out of his penis. This is not a cool new superpower that you possess - it is a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

When to get checked?
If you have more than one sexual partner, get checked. If you have any of the following symptoms, get checked: that fire penis thing I mentioned; anything other than semen, pre-cum or urine coming out of your penis; anything growing on your genitals that aren't part of your original packaging. If your partner(s) have any symptoms or you are unsure of his or her sexual past/present, get checked.

What are the tests like?
Gone are the days of the painful "swab"test. Your doctor can check you for some common STIs with a simple urine test. Some of the STIs cause sores or growths on the skin, so the clinician will want to take a look at your penis and scrotum. Don't be shy. Some STIs may involve a blood test or a swab of your mouth. Check out the resource section for clinics in your area.

What are they looking for?
The most common STIs in California are Chlamydia and Genital Warts.
Chlamydia is curable with antibiotics, and preventable with condoms (since it lives in semen and vaginal fluids). It can cause pretty serious damage to the reproductive system if it is not treated. The sneaky thing about it is that it frequently doesn't cause symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to get checked.
Genital warts are caused by a virus. They look like small bumps, usually the same color as your skin. There is no cure for genital warts, although removing the warts (by a clinician) helps to prevent the spread and growth. Also, some of the strains of the virus can cause cancer of the cervix. Not a gift that most women want to receive.
While not as common as Chlamydia and Genital Warts, HIV is still a force to be reckoned with. If you'd rather not be stuck with a needle, you can request Orasure, an HIV test that uses an oral swab.
If you'd like additional information on these or other STIs, check out the resource listings.

How do I keep from getting it?
STIs are spread in two basic ways - through the exchange of fluids and through skin-to-skin contact. Condoms do a great job at protecting against the "fluid"infections because it keeps your fluid from mixing with your partner's fluid. But, remember that condoms only protect the areas they cover, so healthy skin can still come in contact with infected skin.
It is also helpful to know who you're having sex with.
Oh, and did I mention condoms?
